The Association of Ontario Land Surveyors is sad to notify you of the death of Michael James MacDougall Maughan, OLS #920. Born in Toronto in 1933, Mike spent his high school years in Aurora and attended Knox College at the University of Toronto (5T5). His love of the outdoors, math, and puzzles drew him to a career in land surveying and civil engineering – working in such exotic locales as the swamps of eastern Ontario, Elliot Lake, and six months on Michipicoten Island in Lake Superior. He continued his professional career as the Township Land Surveyor and Deputy Engineer at the Township of Toronto (now City of Mississauga). Soon after, Mike met the love of his life, Judith Tomsett, on a blind date, and they were married in 1963. Heather and then Robert completed the family. By 1975 Mike became a partner in McConnell Maughan, Ltd. in Oakville where the family moved in 1979. He was proud to serve as the President of the OLS in 1978. Mike then went on to achieve his Canada Lands Surveyor designation, including his children in his study sessions by asking them to quiz him. The outdoors was always a draw for Mike. From building twin cottages with his older brother Larry on Diamond Lake to enjoying the years at Cedar Springs where he and Judith made many long-lasting friendships. Cedar Springs was also a favourite spot for his grandkids. Grandpa let them drive (and almost crash) the golf cart, hit (and lose) innumerable golf balls, played endless card games with them, taught them about nature, and regaled them with stories of his adventures. Michael James MacDougall Maughan died peacefully at home in his 91st year on October 4, 2023. He was predeceased by his wife, Judith Ann (Tomsett). He will be missed by daughter Heather Jarmyn and her husband Tom, his son Robert Maughan and his wife Naomi, his grandchildren Benjamin Jarmyn and his wife Elise, Duncan Jarmyn, Emily Maughan, Nicholas Maughan and nieces, nephews, and extended family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local food bank in his memory.
