The Association of Ontario Land Surveyors is sad to notify you of the death of Michael James MacDougall Maughan, OLS #920. Born in Toronto in 1933, Mike spent his high school years in Aurora and attended Knox College at the University of Toronto (5T5). His love of the outdoors, math, and puzzles drew him to a career in land surveying and civil engineering – working in such exotic locales as the swamps of eastern Ontario, Elliot Lake, and six months on Michipicoten Island in Lake Superior. He continued his professional career as the Township Land Surveyor and Deputy Engineer at the Township of Toronto (now City of Mississauga). Soon after, Mike met the love of his life, Judith Tomsett, on a blind date, and they were married in 1963. Heather and then Robert completed the family. By 1975 Mike became a partner in McConnell Maughan, Ltd. in Oakville where the family moved in 1979. He was proud to serve as the President of the OLS in 1978. Mike then went on to achieve his Canada Lands Surveyor designation, including his children in his study sessions by asking them to quiz him. The outdoors was always a draw for Mike. From building twin cottages with his older brother Larry on Diamond Lake to enjoying the years at Cedar Springs where he and Judith made many long-lasting friendships. Cedar Springs was also a favourite spot for his grandkids. Grandpa let them drive (and almost crash) the golf cart, hit (and lose) innumerable golf balls, played endless card games with them, taught them about nature, and regaled them with stories of his adventures. Michael James MacDougall Maughan died peacefully at home in his 91st year on October 4, 2023. He was predeceased by his wife, Judith Ann (Tomsett). He will be missed by daughter Heather Jarmyn and her husband Tom, his son Robert Maughan and his wife Naomi, his grandchildren Benjamin Jarmyn and his wife Elise, Duncan Jarmyn, Emily Maughan, Nicholas Maughan and nieces, nephews, and extended family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local food bank in his memory.

Born in Guyana, Frank and family immigrated to Canada in 1964, settling in Scarborough, Ontario. He was a member of the Land Surveyors of Ontario and ran Delph & Jenkins Ltd. with cofounder Kevin Jenkins. During that time he surveyed many important Toronto landmarks including the SkyDome, CN Tower, and Pearson International Airport. He loved reading, listening to, and watching the news; quizzing his grandchildren about Guyanese slang; and was keenly interested in world history and geography. He was a complicated man and his family will remember Frank, amongst ourselves, in our own ways. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary; children: Frank (Cathy) and Diane (Charles); grandchildren Jamie (Kristina), Danielle (Brendan), and Candice (Jacob); great-grandchildren Talulah and Phoebe; sister Clare Faria; and nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard; sister, Sheila; and parents, Philomena and Frank. The Association of Ontario Land Surveyors is sad to notify you of the death of James Murray Purcell, OLS #969 The Purcell Family is saddened by the passing of James (Jim) Murray Purcell, who passed away on October 15 in his 92nd year. He was pre-deceased by his wife Marilyn Joan (Olley) and his travel companion Jean Bell. Jim was a very proud father to Murray Purcell and his wife Roselle, as well as Heather Jelley and her husband Peter. He cherished his grandchildren Mathew, Kevin (Erica), Paul (Anna), Hayley (Patrick), and Alex, as well as his beloved great-granddaughter Lillian. Jim grew up in Pembroke, spending summers at the family cottage in Deep River. His stories of friendships and shenanigans growing up were cherished, and his love for his cottage was always evident as he invited family and friends to come and experience this piece of paradise. In 1955, Jim graduated from Forestry at the University of New Brunswick. He kept in touch with many of his classmates over the years and was always game to attend reunions in New Brunswick. He even hosted some of these class reunions at his beloved cottage. Jim married Marilyn in 1957, and they lived in Niagara Falls while he articled and worked for Ontario Hydro, surveying hydro corridors through northern Ontario. In 1961, Jim partnered with Charles W. Lloyd to set up a private professional land surveying company (Lloyd & Purcell Ltd.) in Newmarket, Ontario. This is where he raised his family. In 1986, Mr. Lloyd retired, and Jim and Murray continued the family business until Jim's retirement in 1996. Jim loved to travel and was an adventurous and outgoing travel companion, first with Marilyn and later with Jean. They embarked on numerous trips overseas and explored Canada and the US by road. Jim lived a fulfilling life surrounded by friends and family. He adored fly fishing and was a long-time member of The Franklin Club. He loved exploring the Ottawa River with his grandchildren, whether it was by boat, trekking up Mount Martin with their handmade walking sticks, hiring a beaver plane to fly them up the river, or going to the local dairy for ice cream. Jim took pride in researching the Purcell Irish heritage and was also a great fan of Celtic music. He loved to sing, and his emotional rendition of "Danny Boy" would tug at the heartstrings of anyone who would listen. A great man has been received into God's arms. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. The Purcell family would like to express their gratitude to Southlake Regional Health Centre for their support during this difficult time, especially to Dr. Swarthy Sudhakar for her constant care and attention while Jim was in the hospital, and to Dr. Taremi and Dr. Kavanaugh for their expertise in dealing with Jim's cancer. A private family service will be held at Roadhouse and Rose Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Southlake Regional Health Centre Cancer Centre.
